The Olivet University in New York City was recently shut down over issues of a money laundering case and multiple lawsuits filed against the school.

Lawsuits Filed Against Christian College

According to the report from the Christianity Today website, New York ended the operation of the Christian college, Olivet University, after reviewing its case for two years for having over 50 lawsuits filed against them.

As reported, the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE) marked the university on probation for not complying with the documents needed in the agency, such as financial stability, governance, and allocation of funds.

Additionally, Lisa Beatty, executive director of the ABHE’s commission on accreditation, reportedly said that they were aware of all the allegations and lawsuits that had been filed in the school.

It was also in 2020 when the school pleaded guilty to two charges of fraud-related cases and paid a fine of $1.25 million, as reported.

Moreover, one of the business partners of the school faced money laundering cases and eventually pleaded guilty after receiving $35 million in financing for the university.

The school was reportedly based in California, founded by David Jang, and had an extension campus in New York that was started in 2012.

Furthermore, in 2016, multiple associated businesses with Olivet University were revealed by the Department of Labor which required them to pay their workers as a settlement for their violation.

Accordingly, the settlement included $700,000 and required the company to ensure the working conditions of their workers and facilities.

However, the executive director reportedly said that the New York law might differ from the ABHE accreditation. They are reviewing the cases of the Olivet school to finalize their decision on whether to shut down the school or not.

She reportedly said that if they remove the accreditation of the university in New York, all other campuses in other countries will shut down too.

At present, there are only 50 students at Olivet University in New York, as reported.

About Olivet University

Based on its website, Olivet University was founded as Olivet Theological College & Seminary (OTCS), which offered ministry-related programs across the state and the world in 2000.

It reportedly offers distance learning so that everyone can reach and study in the university anywhere in the world.

Through the years, the OTCS has expanded rapidly to cater to all the needs of the students.

It established various departments that offered degree programs in music, arts, journalism, technology, language education, business, doctoral studies, global strategic studies, Islamic understanding, and faith and family, as reported.

Also, different organizations were reportedly created to support the university initiatives to support academic studies and the spiritual formation of the students.

Accordingly, Olivet University is a Christian education that gives students a conducive environment to pursue their endeavors.

It reportedly provides programs that promote camaraderie among the students in the university through working and worshiping together and getting to know the students and faculty members.

The university aims to train and equip the students through its programs offered as one of the institutions of biblical higher education, as reported.
