The Mercy House of the Archdiocese of Newark's Respect Life Office has recently distributed winter wear to needy adults and children.
Winter Wear Project
As reported via the Jersey Catholic, the distribution of winter wear is part of their annual 'Coats and Candy Giveaway' held on October 25.
Even though the event was not scheduled until 11 a.m., a big crowd waited four hours outside The Mercy House's Newark facility to reserve a place in line.
The facility is located at 620 Clinton Ave.
Cheryl A. Riley, director of the Respect Life Office and The Mercy House, reportedly said that they do the event yearly because there is always a demand for it.
As soon as the people were inside the facility, they chose a brand new or lightly used coat for every member of the family who needed one.
As reported, they were also given winter accessories such as hats, gloves, scarves, sweaters, and other items.
In line with the Halloween season, those who received winter wear also take home goodie bags stuffed with sugary confections.
As reported, in the weeks leading up to the event this year, we witnessed many people coming into The Mercy House who did not have any coats on, including very young children.
In addition, the center also assists many immigrants born in countries with year-round warm climates and have no idea how cold it can be in New Jersey.
During the colder months, they reportedly ensure everyone has what they require to keep themselves warm.
Moreover, all the clothes were graciously given by churches, individuals, and archdiocese staff who work for the organization.
Around 50 coats were gathered through a charity drive held at the Archdiocese's Pastoral Center in Newark, in addition to the more than 150 coats donated by the parishioners of St. Stephen Church in Kearny.
In addition, the Accem Warehouse located in Bayonne donated 140 crates full of brand-new sweaters.
About The Mercy House
As per the same source, the Mercy House was established in 2018 as a center for pregnant and parenting women and has subsequently broadened its purpose to assist anybody in need.
Presently, it offers nonperishable food, clothing, baby supplies, furniture, and assistance in finding employment and housing to anybody visiting its Newark office.
Accordingly, the purpose of the Mercy House is to provide a haven for individuals and families in need, as well as emotional assistance and healing in a hospitable, religious setting.
About Archdiocese of Newark

The Eucharist they celebrate together is reportedly both a sign and the means of their unity and of the even greater agreement that will be attained through the Spirit of Jesus Christ.
In the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, His death, and resurrection, the Catholic community recognizes and appreciates the expression of the Father's gift of love for all people.
As individuals and as a community, the Catholics are called by the Spirit of the risen Christ to witness Christ's presence and His ongoing mission in society.
