On Saturday, the Women's Ministry of Shiloh Baptist Church of Orlando hosted a gathering of local women who listened to a keynote speech highlighting positivity.

Christina Watkins, a reporter and anchor for WESH2 News, delivered a speech during the "Stepping out with a Hattitude" event in celebration of Women's History Month. Accordingly, attendees wore spring hats during the event.

Making a Difference Through Positivity

Watkins' speech focused on why women should always seek to observe and maintain a positive attitude so they can 'make a difference' in society.

"Being positive is about your response and how you press on. A positive attitude helps you make a difference in everyone around you. When you look at your growth and altitude, it doesn't mean comparing your success to someone else's. It doesn't mean competing to see who's the fastest to climb higher," WESH2 News quoted Watkins saying.

The reporter and anchor stressed that striving to achieve positivity doesn't mean one has to be pretentious.

"When you're trying to stay positive, it doesn't mean you're putting on a fake smile, happy face or pretending like everything's fine. There will be moment when things are not OK and that's OK," she explained.

Watkins added that it's vital that women' do not beat themselves up' once they face more and tougher problems. She said that not everyone faces the same obstacles, in much the same way that people do not share the same motivation for climbing a mountain.

"Everyone's mountain looks different," Watkins stressed.

She also highlighted the need for women to 'focus on their journey, maintain their faith, and show kindness towards people while lending them a hand.'

"While you're climbing and trying to overcome whatever life may bring, someone else is trying to do the same," Watkins told her audience in closing.

About Shiloh Baptist Church of Orlando

According to its website, Rev. Alan Arnett and six other Christians joined in worship in 1899 at the house of Mrs. Rachel Gay. That meeting of believers signaled the founding of Shiloh Baptist Church of Orlando.

Reverend Arnett became the church's founding pastor, who worked hard to invite new members and led to its first batch of candidates for baptism. The church grew from there and eventually entered the South Florida Missionary Association.

Arnett's leadership bore more fruits when the church purchased a lot on the corner of Bryan and Jackson streets. It was there that the church erected its first sanctuary.

Today, Pastor Derrick Williams leads the congregation. He has been Shiloh's Senior Pastor for over a decade.

He reportedly entered ministry life in 2005 and obtained his license as a pastor in the same year. Pastor Williams was ordained in July 2009.

He is joined in the church leadership by Rev. Richard Pollard (Men's Ministry), FRev, Freddie Johnson (Educational Ministry), and Minister Marquise McMiller (Youth Ministry).

The church is located at 580 West Jackson St. in Orlando. Those who wish to contact the church may call (407) 422-9631 or email shiloh@sbcorlando.org.
