About Camphor Memorial Church

Camphor Memorial Church seeks to improve the quality of life in the local neighborhood, the city, and the world by bringing lost souls to Jesus Christ and nurturing and supporting a fellowship of Christians.

As there were no Methodist churches in the West Philadelphia area in 1922, Rev. William Casey, Calvary Methodist Episcopal Church's pastor, and his wife, Catherine, opened their home to a small group for Bible studies and class meetings. They also established Camphor.

Funding for six missions in West Philadelphia, including the small "Saint Matthew Mission," was approved by the Board of Home Missions the following year.

According to the church's history, reverends Marion Clark, Noah Moore, and Daniel Rideout led Camphor to success. The church held the 1944 Delaware Conference Annual Session after buying its sanctuary and buildings in January 1943.

Recreational programs, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, a tutoring service, a youth fellowship, and a Day Care Center are examples of how Camphor has prioritized Christian education and community outreach. Meanwhile, Camphor Memorial Church hosts Bible studies, GED classes, a food pantry, a soup kitchen, summer camps, and a literacy program.

Rev. Dr. Frank N. Moore, the 'talented and spirit-filled pastor,' engages and empowers everyone to deepen their discipleship and develop new ministries. He also revitalizes existing ministries to meet the changing needs of the community and the congregation.

Camphor Council for Community Development

Camphor founded the non-profit Camphor Council for Community Development (CCCD) in 1985 to buy abandoned properties and turn them into homes for needy people.

In 1989, a five-year ministry program was created, and a planning conference was held annually to produce detailed action plans to meet the plan's goals.
