Master of Jazz is coming to Warren County, and Warren Music Conservatory will host a five-day camp for 5th and 12th graders youth. This week long-camp is intended for those students who already know how to play instruments.

A Five-Day Camp

Interested applicants are encouraged to call the Conservatory since they can only enroll 25 students.

The camp will start on Aug. 22 and continue until Aug. 26. The center is available to all students. Conservatory members and non-members are welcome to join. The five-day camp is sponsored by Erie Arts and Cultures Board and the Conservatory.

Erie Arts and Cultures Board believe that arts can develop soft skills to survive modern society. According to a source, they aim to allow every individual to have access to arts to succeed academically and through communal environments.

About Mikel Prester

Mikel Prester, an alto saxophone player, will perform with the students together with Glarner and other local teachers.

Glarner said that Prester has been into music since he was eight. Bethel A.M.E. Church Duchess Overton was Prester’s first teacher, and his musical roots run deep. Prester is on his way to becoming part of the New Masters of Jazz. Also, Glarner added that Prester had shared one stage with prominent artists.

Warren Music Conservatory

The Warren Music Conservatory is a child-friendly group that offers excellent music education. They are composed of professional teachers and musicians and offer private lessons for kids of all ages and skill levels.

Joining Warren Music Conservatory only costs $50, and current YMCA members are free. Weekly group classes are 30 minutes per session, and their monthly payment is $69. At the same time, it costs $99 for private lessons.

Mikel Prester’s Residency in Meadville

Mikel Prester recently finished a six-day residency at Meadville Council of the Arts (MCA). A half-dozen Meadville residents participated in the residency program that trained them in jazz and blues musical and technical fundamentals.

Also, they had the opportunity to learn the cultural roots and history of Black American music in connection to slave ownership and the persecution of Black people in America.

Mikel addressed these issues clearly and directly and was pleased with the response. He doesn't want to make anyone anxious, but these are complex topics to discuss.

The event concluded with a Sunday evening performance at the MCA's Gardner Theater, which included each participant's poems, songs, and impromptu solos. The event was held at a monthly jam session hosted by the MCA for decades.

2022 NEA Jazz Masters

Stanley Clarke, Donald Harrison, Jr., Billy Hart, and Cassandra Wilson were honored by the National Endowment for the Arts as 2022 NEA Jazz Masters.

On March 31, the program celebrated its 40th anniversary and collaborated with SFJAZZ at the SFJAZZ Center’s Robert N. Miner Auditorium.

Dianne Reeves hosted the concert, which highlighted the performance of Clarke, Hart, and Harrison. The show was free and open to the public and was available online and via radio.
