First United Methodist Church of Phoenix’s History

First United Methodist Church said they trace their roots in the United Methodist Church back to John Wesley, an Anglican priest from the 18th century who managed to combine his traditional high church Anglicanism with evangelical faith and a kind disposition.

They strictly adhere to this custom, according to the church's website.

The church said a group of missionaries from California was dispatched to the small town of Phoenix with the intention of founding a Methodist Episcopal Church at the beginning of the First Church tale.

The local brush arbor, which served as a gathering place for the community, hosted the first religious services in 1881, according to the church. The church said they quickly constructed a one 20 x 40-foot room adobe meeting house as their initial structure.

First United Methodist Church of Phoenix continued to outgrow its buildings over the course of the following 70 years or more, and in the 1950s it constructed the current sanctuary, an extraordinary example of mid-century church architecture that is rife with symbolism and history.

The church said they commemorated the church's 125th anniversary in 2006 and 2007.

After spending many years in different parts of the city, the windows from the former downtown church returned to First Church in 2008 and 2009 after spending many years there, according to the church.

The church said they are quite fortunate that their current house of worship includes this aspect of their heritage.

Church’s Giving and Commitment

The church said they are currently developing a stewardship plan for the coming year, 2022.

This year, the church said they will place special emphasis on the stewardship narrative that has shaped First Church's history, present, and future.

It added that they are aware that the past, present, and future are intertwined and that what they do now is an expression of their gratitude for the faithful stewards of the past.

The church said it also shapes who they are today and who they hope to be in the future— faithful in discipleship and devoted to serving others.
