Church’s History

According to the church's website, Wesley Chapel, a new area of activity for Methodism, was founded in 1853 and is situated in the Niskey Lake neighborhood of Fulton County, Georgia.

The church said  John Waits, Sidney Robins, and David Waits were among the first members. David Waits was a well-known musical director, it added.

He served as a chorister for both the church and the camp gatherings, according to the church.

A tiny group of obedient consecrated men and women who were committed to serving God made up the membership, the church said.

The church said in the vicinity of Campbellton Road and Fairburn Road, a post office was erected following the American Civil War.

Ben Hill was chosen as its name in honor of the new U. S. Senator from Georgia's Troup County, it added.

The area of Fulton County where Campbellton Road and Fairburn Road intersected had a shift in population center in 1875, according to the church.

The church said Mt. Gilead Cross Roads was given that name in honor of the Mt. Gilead Methodist Church, the first Methodist church to be founded in Fulton County.

Wesley Chapel's members started debating moving to a more convenient place as a result of this reality, it added.
