Cascade United Methodist Church’s History
The history of Cascade United Methodist Church spans more than 200 years and is significantly longer than the history of just one congregation, according to the church.
The church said it actually dates back to 1735, when two brothers named John and Charles Wesley immigrated to America from England and began serving as missionaries in Savannah, Georgia.
From this straightforward start, further missionaries began to visit the colonies and found churches, it added.
Cascade United Methodist Church said in Baltimore, Maryland, on Dec. 24, 1784, during the Christmas Conference gathering, the Methodist Episcopal Church was formally established.
The Cascade is a part of the history of the tens of thousands of congregations that have served the Lordship of Christ and the United Methodist Church globally over the years, according to the church. As a result, they are relational rather than independent, it added.
The church said the history of one member of the wider family known as Cascade is presented on its website.
Church During Early Years
A group of 18 to 20 persons got together one evening in the fall of 1926 at Mrs. G.F. Jones' house at 1454 Beecher Street with the goal of starting a Methodist church in the Cascade neighborhood, according to the church.
The church said the first service of the Cascade Methodist Episcopal Church South was held on Oct. 3, 1926, in a business on Beecher Street close to Cascade Avenue.
The group was successful in accomplishing its goal. Elder Dr. W. T. Hunnicutt presided as the chief elder, it added.
The founding pastor, Reverend S. A. F. Wagner, led the congregation in establishing the first church structure on Richland Road on April 1, 1927, after the fledgling church had expanded to 120 members by Dec. 1, according to the church.
On Sept. 2, 1936, Mr. H.T. Pullen and Dr. G.H. Stegar donated the adjacent site on Richland Road and Cascade Avenue to the church, enlarging the property so that a bigger, more permanent structure could be constructed, the church said. It added that Cascade Avenue would be the new structure's front.
The church said in his role as the church's twenty-second pastor, Reverend Dr. Kevin R. Murriel is committed to increasing Cascade's community impact and equipping its ministries, members, and guests to be social justice conscious and spiritually aware, spreading the light of Cascade and the light of Christ throughout the city, state, nation, and world.
