Denver Archbishop Samuel Aquila recently joined a public event wherein he shared his insights about abortion in the country. Highlighting his strong opposition against the subject, he also called out politicians for their ‘God Bless America’ phrases, which he described as empty and no longer meaningful.

‘We Have Abandoned God’

On Saturday, Jan. 22, the Denver archbishop was invited to Aurora, Colorado, for the ‘Beacon of Hope Gala.’ As reported via Colorado Times Recorder, the event gave Archbishop Aquila the Beacon of Hope award, wherein he took advantage to share his insights on the ongoing debate about abortion issues in the country.

In his speech, he mentioned that abortion is now the leading cause of death in the world. As per CDC’s official numbers, the number of abortion cases in the country somehow decreased from 2010 to 2019.

But on average, CDC says that more than 600,000 legally induced abortions were conducted in 2019. More than half of those cases came from women who are in their 20s.

Due to the still-high number of abortion cases, Archbishop Aquila was not able to contain his emotion by calling out politicians and the so-called “culture of death” in the country. He said in his speech that many legislators or part of the government say ‘God Bless America’ with emptiness.

He explained that the phrase does not have meaning anymore in seeking God’s mercy or God’s love. He called it a “superficial construction” that they commonly say. The Archbishop then said that if politicians do care or believe in God, they will not promote laws or bills that would endanger the “dignity of human life.”

Thus, he concluded that pro-life supporters and organizations must be ready for the upcoming battle that they must face against abortion. He said that they can only be prepared if they pray and fast. The archbishop added that the battle against abortion is not yet over then pointed out that “as a country, we have abandoned God.”

Beacon of Hope Gala

As per a similar report, the Beacon of Hope Gala where Archbishop Aquila spoke his mind about abortion was also attended by over 750 guests. The event was said to be part of the pro-life’s celebration of Roe v. Wade’s 49th anniversary.

According to Brittanica, the Roe v. Wade case happened on Jan. 22, 1973. The case ruled that an “unduly restrictive state regulation of abortion” is deemed unconstitutional.

“We need to be ready for what our streets will look like if Roe v. Wade is overturned because there are people who are filled with hatred who will do horrible things,” Aquila said.

The Beacon of Hope Gala also held a fundraising auction for the Marisol clinics, operated by the Catholic Charities of Denver. As said, the medical agency offers women’s health and family health services, but not abortion nor contraceptives.

They also claimed that the majority of their clients came from a low-income family. Thus, funding the firm is necessary to protect their rights and babies’ right to live.
