Msgr. Edward Pace High School recently hosted a food drive that collected over 2,700 pounds of food and donated to various community groups.

Tons of Love Food Drive

According to the Archdiocese of Miami, Pace University's Mission Club, whose members are committed to assisting others by participating in community service activities, coordinates the annual Tons of Love Food Drive.

Food pantries at Mother of Our Redeemer Parish, St. James Parish, Annunciation Middle School, and Pace High School were some of the organizations that benefited from the year's collection.

Other recipients included the Marianitas Sisters in Opa-Locka, who offer social work services in the surrounding area; migrant workers in South Dade, assisted by the Encuentros Juveniles movement; and migrant workers in South Dade.

As mentioned, Pace sponsors its sister schools in Haiti, one of the many charitable causes they assist annually by holding various fundraising events. The Mission Club has held the Tons of Love food drive annually in November since the early 1990s.

During the event, the school is asked to donate canned foods to people who are in need. There is a friendly competition between the four grade levels to see who can bring the most food for the drive.

Winners of the year's competition were juniors in the class of 2024. They were given the award by David Masters and Nelson Bonet, who are theology teachers and have been organizing the event for almost 30 years.

While the yearly Salt and Light Mass is held before the Thanksgiving holiday, the coveted trophy is presented to the competition's victor. The Mass is a celebration of the start of the holiday season and the conclusion of Pace University's Tons of Love Food Drive.

Traditions like Tons of Love, which continue to grow and enable students to experience acts of generosity, contribute to cultivating the culture of support and selflessness that permeates Pace High School.

It was reportedly founded in a Marist tradition in 1961.

They were selected as one of the "Top 50 Catholic High Schools" in the country by the Catholic High School Honor Roll. They also received the "Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award" from the United States Department of Education for their outstanding educational achievements.

Outside of the classroom, the school offers a robust extracurricular student activities program, which includes more than seventy different interest and service clubs, honor societies, and performing groups.

The said opportunities allow their students to develop the talents God has given them while also serving their school and their community.

In addition, their students are challenged to develop a deeper understanding of their Christian faith and to take on leadership roles in the Christian community of the future through a strong collaboration between their campus ministry program and their Department of Theology.

Furthermore, the school aims to provide a dynamic, multidimensional curriculum and equip its varied student body with the skills necessary to pursue a career of learning and service.
