About Knights of Columbus

The Knights of Columbus is reportedly the world's largest Catholic fraternal service organization.

Charity, fraternity, and unity are the three guiding values of this organization, which was established in the United States in 1882.

The organization aims to give Catholic men the tools they need to live out their faith in their communities, homes, parishes, and work.

As charity is one of the guiding principles of the K of C, it has always been central to their activity and beliefs.

Charity means helping an almost uncountable number of different causes, as reported.

Thus, they organize various efforts and programs to help the community. Such efforts include:

  • Coats for kids program
  • Culture of life fund
  • Disaster relief
  • Father McGivney military chaplain scholarship
  • Persecuted Christians fund
  • Ukraine solidarity fund
  • United in charity
  • Vocations fund
  • Warriors to Lourdes

History of Sacred Heart Church

According to its website, the original Sacred Heart Parish land was purchased on Mar. 21, 1916, as indicated by the official records of Miami-Dade county.

In the same year, the Extension Magazine Company of Chicago contributed $1,500 toward constructing a church on the land currently occupied by our parish hall.

In 1917, construction on the first Church building got underway.

The building supplies, including the altar, were gifts, and parishioners built the pews themselves.

That structure was used as a church for 16 years before being converted into a rectory for the subsequent 20 years. However, in the late 1900s, Mrs. Charles Hammond hosted the first Catholic Mass in Homestead in 1915.

She was the one who arranged for a priest to come from Holy Name Church in Miami, which is today known as Gesu. Mrs. Hammond was the first person in Homestead to convert to Catholicism.

Catholics were provided cards that included a schedule of the dates and times that Mass would be held at the Hammond residence.

A community of Catholics can be found at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

In addition, Mother Patrina and three Sisters of St. Francis supervised the opening of Sacred Heart School in 1954.
