Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is blazing on the campaign trail, urging his supporters to "put on the full armor of God."

DeSantis is due for reelection in November.

Using Biblical Passages To Send a Message

According to a report with the Tampa Bay Times, DeSantis uses Biblical references to get his message across during his campaign sorties.

DeSantis recently addressed an audience at Hillsdale College in February this year, where he told his supporters to "stand firm against the left's schemes."

DeSantis assured his followers that he had "only begun to fight."

The Dangers of Christian Rhetoric

The report said the Florida governor is not the only one who is using religious rhetoric during the campaign trail.

Other Republicans have also fused different elements of Christianity in spreading their campaign message.

They are also using the concept of ‘good versus evil’ when illustrating the battle against their political opponents.

Because of this, some religious leaders are expressing their concerns about politicians using religious rhetoric.

According to them, it could pose a threat since it could allow the mobilization of fringe groups.

Faith leaders pointed out that such groups could ‘incite violence to force the government to respect their beliefs.’

Brian Kaylor told the news outlet that he believes DeSantis is playing with fire.

Kaylor is a Baptist minister based in Missouri. He has dedicated 20 years of his life to studying the interplay between religion and politics, the report bared.

He explained that ‘religious rhetoric for the political environment is dangerous.’

Kaylor pointed out that he does not believe that DeSantis meant for his supporters to ‘go out and fight’ on the streets.

According to the report, many conservatives have seen Christian nationalism as part of their “political identity.”

Aggressive Stance

The article noted how DeSantis has become more aggressive in his stance.

He has reportedly used images of war to paint political debates in a new light.

He used war as a metaphor to describe these debates as ‘a battle over who is the better American.’

DeSantis reportedly used the words of Scripture from the Apostle Paul to the Ephesians in his political speeches. The Florida governor substituted the word "devil" with that of "the left."

According to the report, the governor's reelection bid might be the start of a possible run for the presidency in 2024.

Philip Gorski stated that "the full armor of God" passage was a favorite topic for many Pentecostals.

Gorski is a sociologist of comparative history at Yale University.

He explained that these Pentecostals tended to see the world as spiritual warfare.

This was not the only time DeSantis used Biblical references in his campaign speeches.

In another Conservative Political Action Conference held in Orlando in February, he urged supporters to do such.

He rallied supporters once again during the Florida Republican Party’s conference in July.

DeSantis campaigned alongside Doug Mastriano, a Republican candidate for governor of Pennsylvania. Like DeSantis, Mastriano has promoted Christian power in America.

According to the governor's Facebook page, he served as a keynote speaker at the National Conservatism Conference in Aventura.

The gathering was a three-day event that discussed the role of Christianity in politics.

Allyson Shortle pointed out that DeSantis stood out as someone who used the "type of God talk" in an effective manner.

Shortle is a political science professor at the University of Oklahoma.
