Church’s History

The First United Methodist Church of Phoenix’s website stated that may trace their roots in the United Methodist Church back to John Wesley, an Anglican priest from the eighteenth century who managed to combine his traditional high church Anglicanism with evangelical faith and a kind disposition.

The church said it strictly adhered to this custom.

A group of missionaries from California was dispatched to the small town of Phoenix with the intention of founding a Methodist Episcopal Church at the beginning of the First Church tale, according to the church.

The local brush arbor, which served as a gathering place for the community, hosted the first religious services in 1881, the church said.

The church said they quickly constructed a 20 x 40-foot one-room adobe meeting house as their initial structure.

The church continued to outgrow its buildings over the course of the following 70 years or more, and in the 1950s it constructed the current sanctuary, an extraordinary example of mid-century church architecture that is rife with symbolism and history.

The First United Methodist Church of Phoenix commemorated its 125th anniversary in 2006 and 2007.

After spending many years in different parts of the city, the windows from the former downtown church returned to First Church in 2008 and 2009 after spending many years there, according to the church.

The church said they are quite fortunate that the current house of worship includes this aspect of the heritage.

It also offers a space for everyone, young or old, who enjoys traditional or contemporary worship music, whether they are trained musicians or just have a heart for praise.

At 11 a.m., the traditional adult choir, which has around 40 members, leads the service, according to the church.

Traditional Worship Service Every Sunday, they give classic anthems, and on concerts and other important occasions, they perform sizable orchestral works, the church said.
