Atlanta Christian Church will begin its class on Jesus Christ and culture on Sunday, March 5, at the church’s Fellowship Hall.
The church’s website announced that it would be a four-week class until March 26 to help members with meaningful insights on applying faith daily. They added that Holly Carey from the University of Edinburgh would be their teacher.
Besides, the church explained that combining faith and culture is confusing. They noted that a lot of aspects could go wrong. But, they emphasized that faith is not an “extracted” thing.
As further explained, faith is an integrated aspect that connects with culture, art, work, and justice.
Community Practices
In another section, the church pointed out its practices. They mentioned that they believe that God made them in His image and have been destined to flourish in secure, authentic, and integrated relationships.
Atlanta Christian Church noted they are at their best when a diverse group gathers. They said they create an unusual community of “differents” and “unlikes.” The church mentioned that everyone has a spot at the table.
Moreover, they stated that everyone is welcome and could be involved in the church.
Formation, Service Practices
According to the same website, the church believes faith is like a trade that needs time, intention, and perseverance. They pointed out that stepping forward, backward, and sideways are part of their journey toward knowing God.
Atlanta Christian Church posted that they offer classes and groups to support everyone in their walk in nurturing their faith. They said that these courses and groups happen throughout the year.
Moreover, the website said that the church acknowledges the mandate to serve others. They added that it is demonstrated in the entire Biblical story.
They emphasized that God commanded His people to serve others. They highlighted that God mentioned, “love your neighbors as yourself.”
As further explained, the church believes that the Lord called them to find ways to serve other people's needs and empower their strengths and resources for the good of others.
They said they practice this service at Atlanta Christian Church in and outside their church’s walls.
Culture, Faith
The Grand Canyon University website revealed that culture influenced Jesus while He lived on earth. They explained that He used parables that demonstrated God’s Kingdom based on things the people of the culture knew.
Through this process, people could quickly identify what Jesus means, as added on the website. The website noted that the image used in His stories, like shepherds looking after their flock was commonplace and still had the same connotations for others.
In addition, the website said that these parable stories offer many layers to show their “multilayered” connection with God and His nature.
Moreover, they emphasized that their culture gives them the starting point to know the world. But, the website stressed that there is more to the story.
As further explained, no matter where a person begins, it does not mean they would be defined by those circumstances for the rest of their life. They mentioned that people should press beyond their cultural impact and discover Jesus on a personal level.
They said that through experiencing Jesus, they could understand His command and live honorably to Him.
