Cascade United Methodist Church calls college students, young professionals to midtown meetup

Cascade United Methodist Church in Atlanta, Georgia called on college students and young professionals to attend a midtown meetup.

On a Facebook post, the church said the event under the young adult ministry was held on Friday, Aug. 12, at 7 p.m.

According to the church’s post, everyone was welcome, including those professionals who invited a friend or family member to attend.

The church said it was an experience of a night of food, fun, fellowship, worship, and the Word of God.

According to the post, the church's location is at 458 Ponce De Leon Avenue, NE 30308.

Church’s History

A group of 18 to 20 people got together one evening in the fall of 1926 at Mrs. G.F. Jones' house at 1454 Beecher Street with the goal of starting a Methodist church in the Cascade neighborhood, according to the church's website

The church said the first service of the Cascade Methodist Episcopal Church South was held on October 3, 1926, in a business on Beecher Street close to Cascade Avenue. 

This group was successful in accomplishing its goal, it added. According to the church, elder Dr. W. T. Hunnicutt presided as the chief elder.

The church said the founding pastor, Rev. S. A. F. Wagner, led the congregation in establishing the first church structure on Richland Road on April 1, 1927, after the fledgling church had expanded to 120 members by Dec. 1.

On Sept. 2, 1936, Mr. H.T. Pullen and Dr. G.H. Stegar donated the adjacent site on Richland Road and Cascade Avenue to the church, enlarging the property so that a bigger, more permanent structure could be constructed. Cascade Avenue would be the new structure's front, it added.

According to the church, Pastor Lawrence Young joined Cascade as the twenty-first pastor in June 2014. 

The church said in order to make Cascade a platform for ministry and service. Pastor Young concentrated on expanding the kingdom, increasing young involvement in worship, effective communication, teamwork, and cooperation.

As the church's twenty-second pastor, Rev. Dr. Kevin R. Murriel is committed to increasing Cascade's community impact and equipping its ministries, members, and guests to be social justice conscious and spiritually conscious, according to the church.

The church added that extending the light of Cascade and the light of Christ through the city, state, nation, and world.

Pastor Murriel

Murriel presently serves as Senior Pastor of Cascade United Methodist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, where there are more than 7,000 members, the church said. 

He is a well-known prophet and orator of this generation as well as a scholar of the Bible, it added. 

The church said he is a native of Mississippi and graduated from Jackson State University in 2008 with a bachelor's in business administration. 

It added that he was also honored as the "Student of the Year" for the College of Business in 2008. 

Dr. Murriel earned a Master of Divinity from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University and a Doctor of Ministry from Duke University, according to the church.
