Embry Hills United Methodist Church to hold American Red Cross blood drive in Atlanta, Georgia

Embry Hills United Methodist Church (UMC) will host an American Red Cross blood drive for Atlanta residents on Monday, Dec. 19, at the Family Life Center. The drive will occur from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. 

Donors will receive long-sleeve shirts from the church and Red Cross for donating, according to the church’s announcement page.  

Interested Individuals may set an appointment for donation at Red Cross' website and use the sponsor code of the church, "embryhills." They added other options for qualified donors, including their landline number and the Blood Donor App.

How to donate blood

Individuals should make an appointment and choose a donation type at a convenient time, per Red Cross

Donors must consume iron-rich foods before to giving blood, such as red meat, spinach, beans, fish, and poultry. Additionally, they ought to be well-rested and hydrated, as per its website.

Red Cross advised platelet donors to avoid taking aspirin two days before to the donation. Donors are also asked to ask their family and friends to make a donation. The Blood Donor app should be downloaded by them to make the transaction process simpler. 

Requirements include a RapidPass, photo ID, two other forms of identification, and a medication list so professionals know all about the donor's prescriptions and over-the-counter medications, the page revealed. 

Other tips include drinking an extra 16 oz of water before an appointment and eating a healthy meal but not fatty goods, Red Cross bared. 

After blood donation

After donating, donors may enjoy a snack and relax for a few minutes in Red Cross' allowed refreshment and recovery area. Donors might also opt to drink extra four glasses of water and avoid alcohol intake for the next 24 hours, it added. 

For the following hours, Red Cross advised donors to keep their strip bandages and clean their arms to avoid skin rashes. Those who exercise regularly must avoid lifting heavy equipment or doing extensive workouts within the day, as per the page. 

If the needle site starts to bleed, apply pressure and raise your arm for 5-10 minutes or until the bleeding stops, the website revealed. 

To report any additional health information or if problems occur during aftercare, donors are advised to call Red Cross at 1-866-236-3276, it said.

Those who experience dizziness or lightheadedness should stop what they are doing and sit down or lie down until they feel better. Also, avoid performing any activity where fainting may lead to injury for at least 24 hours, the organization revealed.

Red Cross advised to keep eating iron-rich food and that people who donate regularly should take multivitamins with iron to ensure they continue to replenish their iron stores before the next donation.
