First Congregational Church of Atlanta United Church of Christ participated in the mobile food pantry of the Center Helping Obesity In Children End Successfully Inc. (CHOICES) on Friday, Feb. 10, at Mt. Zion Church Parking Lot.
The church’s Facebook page noted that the panty was an excellent way to give back to the community while serving others. They emphasized that their pantries take teamwork suitable for a team-building opportunity.
They added that everyone had a fun community outreach experience.
About CHOICES
The same post noted that CHOICES offers free healthy cooking lessons to children and families through its hybrid programming approach. They explained that they have mobile food pantries monthly.
As further stated, they produce proteins and groceries for families in various Metropolitan Atlanta communities.
On the CHOICES website, they emphasized that they aim to be a parent and kid resource center for clinically diagnosed and at-risk children of obesity. The organization highlighted that it had spread its advocacy for health to over 125,000 kids and adults.
In addition, they stated that they had achieved their goal through cooking classes, workshops, summer camps, and health expos.
Besides, they said they would increase their footprint and support more Atlanta community families to discuss childhood obesity and have healthier lifestyles.
Community Teaching Kitchen
The Community Teaching Kitchen (CTK) is another program of CHOICES. According to another section, they aim to become the premier go-to group for nutrition education by way of healthier cooking.
Also, they seek to train trainers in classes and seminars, as noted on the website.
Moreover, they posted that the CTK does not only serve as an extension of their free Cooking with CHOICES initiatives for low-income households with kids at risk for obesity. But, they would also serve as an educational outlet for the group, as explained on the website.
The website said CTK provides healthy cooking classes to the Atlanta community at a cheaper cost. They stated they would use the collected funds to fulfill the CHOICES mission against childhood obesity.
It added that CTK is a particular project because of its advanced method towards children’s education, adult health, and food sustainability. Also, they mentioned that part of this project included a workshop for trainers and a nutrient-based cooking course.
According to the same website, the project included chronic disease workshops and seminars on alternative food systems.
Cooking with CHOICES
In another section, CHOICES noted that they have a free three-week cooking class series for kids eight years old and above with adults.
The website explained that children could learn to make healthy, delicious recipes on a budget with Executive Chef Ashley Keyes and her culinary team. They added that they would discover all about the “We Can! Toolkit.”
It is about how they could improve Children’s activity and Nutrition made by the National Institutes of Health, as mentioned on the website.
Community Outreach
The church’s website revealed that its community outreach is the primary value at First Congregational Church of Atlanta United Church of Christ.
As further explained, they could achieve their outreach goal through successful community collaboration with other organizations. They noted that these agencies include CHOICES, FCCDC, and Georgia State Panthers Pantry.
