First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta in Georgia said that it will host a “Grief Support” group dedicated to providing support for grieving individuals.

In a Facebook post on Friday, Sept. 2, the church said Rev. Dr. Katie Sundermeier and Rev. Rob Sparks will lead a small group whose goal is to offer comfort and insight to those who are mourning.

Beginning this fall, the group will meet during the week, with meeting hours to be decided based on individuals' availability, according to the church.

Church’s Mission

Among the many local outreach initiatives, First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta has a 35-year tradition of serving breakfast to 250 homeless people every Sunday, according to the church’s website.

The church said it provides up to 12 women with secure lodging and support through the campus' Women's Transformation Center.

The WSB radio station has been broadcasting the world's oldest continuously running religious radio program since 1922, according to the church. 

The first church in Atlanta to broadcast services live on television was First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, and the broadcast is still going strong today, it added.

The High Museum of Art, the Museum of Design Atlanta, the Alliance Theater, the Atlanta Symphony, the Atlanta Opera, and other local cultural institutions are among those with which the First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta claims to have strong ties.

The church said through these alliances, the church frequently presents performances and activities.

According to the church, Pastor Dr. Lyons developed the plans and concepts for the installation of stained glass windows.

At least 10 windows that encircle the sanctuary's floor, according to the church, reflect the biblical story from Abraham to the apostles' efforts to spread Christianity after Christ's death and resurrection.

There are four locations with a total of twenty windows, it added. The church said there are seven Tiffany windows, four D'Ascenzo windows, and nine Willet windows.

The church said it is home to the Southeast's oldest continuously operating preschool, which was established 70 years ago.

First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, which was established in 1848, is situated next to the Woodruff Arts Center at the intersection of Peachtree and 16th Streets, according to the church

The church said it is an urban church renowned for being a pioneer in worship, spiritual development, service, fostering ties within the community, and the arts. 

The church has celebrated various significant milestones and is made up of many families that have contributed to the development of this community, it added. 

The church said it anticipates its 175th Anniversary in 2023, First Presbyterian Church said it continues to build on these traditions.

On May 29, 2020, First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
