Church’s History

The church said a firmly established and expanding Christian community called Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church can be found on the Emory University campus in Atlanta's famed Druid Hills district.

Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church said it comprises people of all ages, ranging from ages 2 to 102.

It said that it provides ministries that encourage a sense of community and belonging for everyone through worship, service, instruction, and hospitality.

The added it can trace their roots as a United Methodist congregation to John Wesley, an Anglican priest serving in the Church of England in the 1700s.

Societies of "Methodists" are what they are called because their members adhered to a daily schedule of religious observance and charitable works. Hence, their establishment, according to the church.

It added that these societies later moved to Ireland and eventually to America, formally recognized as a separate denomination in 1784.

According to the church, there are around 11 million United Methodists worldwide.

The church said that social responsibility and religion have always been intertwined for United Methodists.

The church said it cherishes an ecumenical tradition and collaborates with other Christian denominations and other religions, particularly the partnerships with Emory University's Office of Spirituality & Religious Life.

It said that it believed, as Wesley put it, "that the world is our parish" and that "the gospel of Jesus Christ knows no holiness except social holiness.”

As the church works to develop disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world, the Glenn United Methodist Church said it has been and will be a place of openness and acceptance.

May God lead everyone as they work to become a community of faith committed to loving God and loving one another in the future, according to the church.
