Christ Church Book Club
About once every two months, a parishioner of the cathedral or a member of the cathedral's staff leads a discussion of a book that is either thought-provoking, compelling, or absolutely essential to read.
The book in question will then be added to the permanent collection of the Cathedral's library. Every Wednesday night will begin with a small dinner followed by a conversation lasting from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
According to the church’s post, on Wednesday, Jan. 25, the book club will discuss Jenny Odell's book titled "How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy."
This book, which is on the list of the best-selling books in the New York Times, is a collage of ideas on detaching from life online. It is composed of fragments from artists, writers, critics, and philosophers.
It also stated that in the book's first chapter, she observes that she thinks things that already exist are "infinitely more interesting" than anything she could possibly create.
After that, she constructs a complicated, intelligent, and ambitious book that reads like a self-help manual and then grows into a wide-ranging political manifesto.
Megan Suttman will serve as the facilitator for this particular gathering of the book club.
In her book, according to Melville House Books, Odell considers the public's interest to be the most valuable, albeit exhausted, asset. She thinks that people must make deliberate, ongoing decisions about how they apply it.
Although people may not spend it on the things that capitalism values, she argues that once they begin to pay a new kind of attention, they will be able to take more radical forms of political action, rethink humanity's place in the natural world, and develop deeper insights into what constitutes success and fulfillment in life.
