Mount Calvary MB Church teams up with Miami PD for back to school event

The Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Miami, Florida, recently partnered with the Miami Police Department and multiple sponsors for a 'Back to School' program.

As per its Facebook page, the event started from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6, at the church premises.

According to the announcement, the event was first come, first served and featured free school supplies, backpacks, food, games, haircuts, and even vouchers for uniforms and haircuts.

Apart from the church and the police department, the event was made possible with the help of multiple organizations. 

This includes the United Teachers of Dade, Empower Community Health Center, WMBM Media Group, Jessie Trice Community Health Center, Florida PMC, and the Office of the Miami Mayor, among others.

The WSVN reported that the attendees of the event enjoyed ice cream, video games, BBQ, and all the goodies they will need for the upcoming school year.

Mount Calvary MB Church

The Mount Calvary MB Church is a Baptist church that serves Miami. The church is active online and posts its full services every Sunday.

The church is also known as a frequent host of community events. In June, the church held an event for Mothers Fighting for Justice.

Rev. Dr. Billy WL Strange Jr. is the current pastor of the church. The reverend is the 5th vice president of the Florida General Baptist Convention, Inc. and the moderator of the Dade United Missionary Baptist Association, Inc.

Florida General Baptist Convention, Inc.

The Florida General Baptist Convention, Inc. is an organization that started through a resolution by Rev. James Page of the Bethlehem Association in 1873.

According to the convention's page, the group started as the Florida Bethlehem Baptist State Convention, which consisted of over 56 Baptist churches.

During its long history, the convention grew further as it extended its territory. 

As per Miami Times Online, Dr. C. P. Preston, Jr. of Peaceful Zion Missionary Baptist Church is the current president of the convention. The convention elected Preston in 2018 as the 23rd president of the convention. 

The convention is active when it comes to serving the communities of the churches under it and has multiple ministries. These ministries include hospitality, disaster relief, criminal justice, and social justice, to name a few.

Miami Police Department

The Miami Police Department calls itself a "pioneer in community-policing and is modeled by agencies across the world." The department's mission is to ensure that the people in Miami can live and work without fear. This vow also extends to the people visiting Miami.

According to its Facebook page, apart from neighborhood policing, the organization enters partnerships with business, corporate, and residential communities. These partnerships and coalitions improve the quality of life of the community. 

Further, the police department ensures that it respects and values cultural unity and differences in the community as an important part of progress.

Today, the organization is led by Chief of Police Manuel A. Morales. Chief Morales leads the department, which consists of 1,400 sworn officers and 400 civilian personnel.
