Atlanta First United Methodist Church in Georgia held a new sermon series, “Seriously!?”, for neighbors.

In a Facebook post on Friday, Aug. 5, the church said the new sermon series starts on Sunday, Aug. 7, at 10 a.m.

Participants can attend in-person or online through livestream on the church’s official Facebook pages.

According to the church’s post, the new sermon series discussed examining what exactly it takes to do fair and just for the neighbors, be compassionate and loyal in love, and practice humility.

The church said everyone is living in challenging and unstable times.

It, however, said the good news is that God's people have already experienced this.

Atlanta First United Methodist Church said they have given up and cried out, "What do we do now?" To which God replied, "Be serious about doing justice, loving compassion, and walking humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8).

Church’s Mission

Making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world is their mission as members of the United Methodist Church family, according to the church's website.

The church said they strive to be examples of the Christian life that Jesus taught them to live by worshiping God, serving those in the community, growing together in the faith and love for God, and engaging with one another, the city of Atlanta, and the wider world.

Church’s History

In 2022, Atlanta First United Methodist Church will commemorate its 175th anniversary, according to the church

The church said the tale has come to mean a lot to them because of how long they have served God and the community.

Over the years, a variety of fascinating and well-known locals have worshiped with them, it added.

The history begins with early missionary endeavors, according to the church on the same website.

Atlanta was originally known as Marthasville, a little railroad community that served as the terminus for four train lines that were then being built, the church stated.

It added that preachers in the area were collecting groups for services.

Small groups held services and discussed future plans during meetings in private residences, warehouses on Peachtree Street and Auburn Avenue, and even the Georgia Railroad offices, the church explained.

A philanthropic person named Samuel Mitchell gave the Methodists a large amount of land in 1845, according to the church.

A triangle-shaped parcel was encircled by Peachtree, Pryor, and Houston Streets (near where the Georgia Pacific building stands), the church said.

The church added a  tiny log home with chimneys at each end was constructed here (pictured above).

It served as a church on Sundays and a school during the week, according to the church.

The church said Union Sabbath School, an interdenominational Sunday school, was established.

Preaching services were held by Presbyterians, Baptists, and Methodists; each denomination alternated their Sundays to prevent confrontations, it added.
