Christ the King Lutheran Church

Christ the King Lutheran Church is a part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The church is inclusive and welcomes people of all cultures, races, sexual orientations, and gender identities.

The church’s mission is to proclaim the message of God’s work through Jesus. The congregation said that “faith is expressed in the rich liturgical life of the congregation, our baptism, and our celebration at the Lord’s Table.”

Also, the church is the home of the Bach Society Houston.

The church began in the 1940s when the Board of American Mission of the Augustana Lutheran Church commissioned the establishment of a church in Southwest Houston.

Christ the King held its first service on Sunday, June 24, 1945. The event happened on Roberts Elementary School at Roberts Elementary School with only nine people in attendance.

The pioneers of the church were the reason for the church’s enthusiastic approach to the classical music of Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart.

Pastor Kenneth Larson is the first pastor to accept the call of Christ the King. He was a pastor who helped the church reach out to young people. Under his guidance, the church established a Sunday School and other committees and activities.

At the same time, the church continued to become a place for music, even earning the reputation of “The Music Church.”

Over the years, the church has been led by Pastors P.O. Bersell, Earl M. Bengtson, George C. Benson, and more.

Pastor Amandus J. Derr

Pastor Amandus J. Derr is the Interim Senior Pastor of the church. He is a Pennsylvania native with a Master of Divinity Degree with a concentration in Hebrew from the Lutheran School of Theology.

He also has a Doctor of Ministry Degree in Moslem-Christian relations from the Divinity School at Drew University.

Over the years, he served the Saint Peter’s Church in Manhattan, the Teaneck Clergy Council in New Jersey, and A Partnership of Faith in New York City, among other things.

He’s also a writer and contributor for the Lutheran Forum, Currents in Theology and Mission, and Christian Century.
