Pastor Ed C. Jones, III said that they make sure that those in need can have scholarships on their premises.

"We created the school to inspire (the) future first," said the pastor.

KPRC2 reported that the pandemic made people realize the importance of the availability of reliable daycares for working parents. They interviewed Principal Alicia Lewis of the Blackshear Elementary in the Third Ward.

According to Lewis, the area is 100 percent economically disadvantaged, but it does not keep their children from excelling. She also said that the pandemic provided them with difficulties as there were staff changes and a higher demand for them.

Regarding childcare, Lewis commented that it takes everyone to make sure that the scholars can overcome their obstacles and circumstances.

The Third Ward

Houston's Third Ward is one of six historic wards. It is a culturally and historically rich African-American neighborhood. It is also home to the Texas Southern University, University of Houston, and Emancipation Park.

The University of Houston reported that the community was founded in 1836. It is "the city's most diverse black neighborhood and a microcosm of the larger black Houston community."

It is also known as the cradle of the city's civil rights movement as it was the place where black college students sat in a segregated lunch counter as a protest back in the 1960s.
