Christian Organization Joni & Friends is encouraging everyone to be part of their Wheels for the World program by donating a wheelchair to the people who are in need.
Wheels for the World
On the official website of Joni & Friends, Wheels for the World gives people with disabilities across the world life-changing mobility as well as the hope of the Gospel.
According to the official website of Joni & Friends under the Donate a Wheelchair section, every wheelchair donation provides someone with the opportunity to encounter Jesus Christ's love and hope. Someone’s tax-deductible contribution of mobility equipment allows someone to go to school, church, and get involved in their community.
As per the same website, it is mentioned that Wheels for the World welcomes mobility equipment contributions such as:
- All sizes and styles of manual wheelchairs,
- Aluminum canes, crutches, and walkers,
- Footrests for wheelchairs,
- Other wheelchair accessories including trays,
- Wheelchair seat cushions, as well as
- New crutch and armpit pads, as well as handgrips and foot tips.
In line with that, it is also mentioned on the same website that one can enter their zip code on the find a drop-off location section found on the same website to donate equipment and then contact their local Chair Corps volunteer to organize a pick-up or drop-off.
On the same website, it is stated that there are four steps the organization do to make Wheels for the World works:
- Step 1: Collection. Across the United States, volunteers are known as "Chair Corps" collect secondhand manual wheelchairs. You may help by donating a wheelchair, joining the Chair Corps, or organizing a wheelchair drive.
- Step 2: Restoration. Wheelchairs are being reinstated in 15 federal, state, and private correctional facilities across ten states, with plans to expand. Inmates are taught how to recondition wheelchairs to like-new condition.
- Step 3: Transportation. Transporting wheelchairs to restoration shops and shipping ports is a constant requirement. We are continuously searching for volunteers to assist us to collect approximately 10,000 wheelchairs each year.
- Step 4: Distribution. Each client is given a wheelchair that is custom-made for them, as well as the Gospel message. Recipients also get a Bible in their native language, instruction in wheelchair usage and maintenance, and affiliation with a local Christ-honoring church.
