Arts as Means of Discovery
It is stated on the same website that the church believes that arts assist people in coming into contact with the holy and sacred. The arts equip us with the tools they need to comprehend life's ultimate significance.
The arts, as per the same website, motivate people to examine themselves and their lives, reminding them of the possibilities of living a fully human existence – full in the sense of exercising their imaginations, utilizing their perceptions and senses, and challenging the unknown and the incomplete.
It is also stated on the same website that arts remind people that faith comes before theology in the same way that character comes before moral decision-making and awareness comes before experience — that their knowledge of God comes before their conceptualizations of God.
Arts Group of Union Avenue (AGUA)
Based on the same website, since its founding in 1988, the Arts Group of Union Avenue (AGUA) has played an essential part in the ministries and expanding congregational life of Union Avenue Christian Church. AGUA is dedicated to providing opportunities for the congregation and the surrounding community to enjoy and engage in the arts.
AGUA, as per the same website, recognizes creative expression as God's creativity at work in their human lives. To that purpose, AGUA is in charge of a variety of culturally engaging programs that distinguish Union Avenue from other urban churches.
Referring to the same website, it is also stated that AGUA is committed to bringing art to the community. On the occasion of her 100th birthday, the organization gave a 100-year-old artist the opportunity to display her works for the first time.
The organization, as stated on the same website, allows AP art students from Soldan International Studies High School and local St. Louis artists to display their work in the Gretchen Brigham Gallery.
In line with that, it is also stated on the same website that a current initiative is establishing a collaborative workshop setting for local youngsters from an after-school program and the artist whose work is on display in the gallery to experiment with and produce various forms of art.
This hands-on experience allows local kids to use their imaginations and participate in a creative process that stimulates their senses and inspires them to investigate the unknown.
